Knappa High Students Advocate for Safer Intersection

A Big Thank You goes out to Knappa High school students who reached out to the Clatsop County Public Works Department about two county roads at the Hillcrest-Conroy intersection.

They suggested realigning the two roads and making a signage change so the intersection would be safer.

“We appreciate the students taking the time to look at this issue. Their fresh perspective is invaluable to us,” said Interim Public Works Director Terry Hendryx. Clatsop County Public Works has taken the students’ suggestions under advisement as it reviews the intersection again.

Cougars - What To Know and Do

Last Sunday, a cougar was sighted exploring around Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach. This past Wednesday, a resident shared a photo with Gearhart Police Chief Gregory.

According to the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, the forested areas along the coast are prime habitat for cougars.

Find out more at the ODW Cougar webpage. Remember:

  • Cougars often will retreat if given the opportunity. Leave the animal a way to escape
  • Stay calm and stand your ground
  • Maintain direct eye contact
  • Pick up children, but do so without bending down or turning your back on the cougar
  • Back away slowly
  • Do not run. Running triggers a chase response in cougars, which could lead to an attack
  • Raise your voice and speak firmly
  • If the cougar seems aggressive, raise your arms to make yourself look larger and clap your hands
  • If in the very unusual event that a cougar attacks you, fight back with rocks, sticks, bear or pepper spray, tools or any items available

Let’s Talk Trash

How Many Non-working Vehicles Can You Have on Your Property?

As part of Clatsop County Code Compliance’s Let’s Talk Trash Campaign, non-working vehicles on personal property are being highlighted.

If there are two or more non-working vehicles being stored on a property in Unincorporated Clatsop County, the property owner may be in violation of Clatsop County Land and Water Use Development Code (LAWDUC).

That is because an auto wrecking yard is defined as any property where two or more motor vehicles are not in running condition, or the parts are stored in the open and the vehicles are not being restored to operation. It also applies to any land, building or structure used for the wrecking or storing of such motor vehicles or parts.
